Obituary

Alvin O. Sabo, who earned a reputation as one of the great trial attorneys in the Capital District of NY, lost his valiant battle with prostate cancer on ….at the age of 79. He passed away surrounded by loving family at his home in Lake Worth Beach, FL. He was born in Paterson, NJ to Solomon and Nettie Sabo, Jewish immigrants who fled to America to escape persecution in their native lands of Ukraine and China. Al graduated with honors from Rutgers University with two bachelor's degrees and then attained a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School. At Rutgers he met Ruth Lechter and they started their 58 year marriage after their junior year of college. Following law school, they moved to NYC where he worked in a Wall Street law firm and they began their family. At the start of 1970 they settled in the Capital District where Al began a career as an Assistant Attorney General of New York under Louis Lefkowitz. A decade later he became a law partner with the Albany trial firm of Donohue, Sabo, Varley, & Armstrong. Al served for more than two decades as a valued member on the Board of Directors of Espey Corporation in Saratoga Springs, NY.

An avid reader, Al was a man of many talents who loved to learn and tell stories. His courtroom skills were so great that he was often chosen to represent fellow attorneys. He was known to some as a nationally ranked racquetball player. Others admired his musical abilities, both as a pianist and singer. For many years he enjoyed singing baritone with the award winning choir at Congregation Berith Sholom in Troy, his home synagogue for more than 50 years. Al also loved hiking, especially up the mountains in his beloved Acadia National Park in Maine. He was a student of history, becoming an expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls and World War II.  He amassed one of the top philatelic collections in the nation of World War II patriotic postal covers. Following retirement Al and Ruth also enjoyed traveling the world together, especially on their annual Jazz Cruises, exploring the Galapagos Islands, and going on a safari to South Africa. His photos from their travels are remarkable. But nothing gave him more joy than having gatherings with his beloved  family.

Al leaves behind three children, Joshua Sabo (Mary Frances) of North Greenbush, NY, Karen Sabo (Derek Davidson) of Boone, NC, and Beth Sabo Novik (Larry) of Saratoga Springs, NY. He adored his seven grandchildren, Adam Sabo of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Rachel Sabo-Hedges of New York City, Maria Sabo of Hyde Park, NY, Mary Davidson of Spartanburg, SC, Nadia Sabo of North Greenbush, NY, and Daniel Novik and Maxwell Novik of Saratoga Springs, NY and honorary grandson Ali Fahramand of Watervliet, NY. He is also survived by his beloved brother Jack Sabo (Marilyn) of Boynton Beach, FL and numerous adoring nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral was arranged by Rubin Memorial Chapel of Boynton Beach, FL and will be led by Rabbi Michael Simon of the Sabo's Florida synagogue, Temple Beth Kodesh of Boynton Beach, FL. Graveside services to be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday March 23, 2023, at South Florida Jewish Cemetery, 6081 S Congress Ave., Lake Worth, FL 33462. Shiva will be private at the family home in Lake Worth Beach, FL.
