Howard Rubin, (1934 - 2026__) died on May 27, 2026.  He spent much of his life working in public education and identified strongly as a secular American Jew.

He was born in Middletown, NY to Abraham Rubin and Clara Finkel Rubin, who both were immigrants from what today is Belarus. He was raised in the East New York section of Brooklyn and was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and the streets of Brooklyn. He held a BA degree from CCNY during its glory days, an MA degree from Brooklyn College and a Doctorate in Education from NYU.  He spent forty-two years in public education, mostly as an administrator. He taught in the New York City junior high schools for twelve years where he also served as acting assistant principal at JHS 49 in Williamsburg. In 1968 he started his career in the NYC suburbs working as an assistant principal in what is now the Blind Brook School District, where his children eventually attended school. A highlight of his career was as a principal in Croton on Hudson, NY, when his elementary school was recognized in 1986 for "national excellence" in education. He was honored, with a small group of principals, in the White House rose garden by President Ronald Reagan. He served briefly as a superintendent on Long Island and after his retirement worked many years as an interim principal in school districts in Rockland, Westchester and Nassau counties.

Between 1989 and 1996 he was executive director of that is now known as the Westchester Jewish Council, the umbrella organization of more than one hundred synagogues and organizations in Westchester County. He always viewed that phase of his career as a gratifying contribution to the Jewish community of Westchester.  While living in Rye Brook he was a long-time member and officer of Congregation KTI in Port Chester.

He was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his children who contribute to society in occupations as a nurse/social worker, a police officer, a teacher and a successful illustrator and cartoonist.

While living in Florida since 2000 with his long-time partner and wife Helene Barnett, they travelled widely and married in Cuba in 2007. He was active in his Florida community, Ponte Vecchio West, enjoyed piloting his 20 foot boat on the Intracoastal, liked to tool around town in his 2003 Mazda Miata, rode his motorcycle across country with his life-time friend Red Finkel, volunteered and served on the board of the Boynton Beach Soup Kitchen and self-published more than twenty volumes about travel and his family. He was an avid gardener who spent time each day puttering on his patio.

A life-long liberal, he was proud of his roots as a first-generation American Jew. He owed many of his views and Jewish identification to the hard work of his parents, Abraham and Clara Rubin, who fervently loved their adopted country.

Survivors include his long time, loving partner and wife, Helene Barnett, his four children; Stacey Rubin, Jonathan Rubin (LIz), Benjamin Rubin (Theresa), Molly Rubin Robinet (Carlos,) his beloved dog Mazel, as well as eight grandchildren; Alex, Claudia, Thomas, Sarah, Ernest, Joshua. Daniel and Jon Jr. Also, Helene's family, who became his own, Sherri and Pete Snyder and their children Jared and Noah.
