Irma Shutan, a resident of the Arbor at Delray, passed away on July 16 at the age of 97.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she spent part of her childhood in Miami Beach but primarily grew up in southwestern Connecticut.

She attended the University of Connecticut for two years where she studied literature and briefly worked as a copywriter for a New York television station before marrying David Shutan, her husband of 71 years with whom she traveled the world several times over. Irma and David moved from Hamden, Connecticut, where they lived for 34 years to South Florida in 1986 – initially on a part-time basis and then full time in 1993.

Irma was a devoted mother to her three children, Suzan, Caron and Bruce, and deeply dedicated to her nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She also was a loyal friend to many and avid tennis player who was young at heart and often passed as much younger than her chronological years.
