On Sunday, September 18, Sheila (Shay) Katz, born June 21, 1935, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at the age of 87. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She loved family, and friends who were like family. She was predeceased by her husband Herman (Chuck) Katz, parents Jennie and Hyman Hiller, sister Florence, brothers Seymour  and Irving and brother-in-law George Weliky.

Born to Jennie and Hyman Hiller, in Brooklyn, NY, she grew up in an apartment in Williamsburg. Her father died when she was 10 years old and although they did not have much... the home was filled with love, laughter, and music. Her two brothers helped to support the family, and Irving kept things lively with his saxophone and group of buddies whom Sheila looked up to. Her sister Florence was the oldest sibling, and her children were Sheila's first niece and nephews, Susan, Charles, and Mark Weliky. Sheila was like a surrogate mother to them when her sister passed away over 50 years ago.

Sheila worked from the early age of thirteen and as a high school senior she opted for a well-paying job, as she fiercely liked the independence that working gave her. Her work ethic remained strong for her entire life. She retired from Muller Martini as an office manager/bookkeeper and made many memories and friends during her lengthy career with that company.

Sheila and Herman (Chuck, Chubby, Hank) Katz were married for over 60 years. They met at a bowling alley and continued to throw strikes on the "Liones and Katz" team in their community league. Sheila kept lifelong friends, Cookie from the third grade, Gladys from her first job at Deteto Scales, Fran from her first apartment as a married couple and Sharon from her last job.... all like family.

Her hobbies included traveling, playing mah-jongg, cards and blackjack but above all knitting. In retirement, Sheila enjoyed her knitting club at Polo Trace and knit a multitude of gorgeous baby sweaters with perfect stitches worked with love. Cruising was another favorite activity as she loved being on the water and knowing that the family would reconvene in the dining hall after a day filled with fun.

Sheila was raised in the Williamsburg Settlement House which was a place for young children to go for activities and services. As a result, she grew up with a community spirit that never faltered. Sheila loved to support charities, gather with friends and family and to be a part of the action. She was fiercely patriotic and interested in the policies of our leaders. She was extremely proud of those that served our country including many family members, and the opportunities that this country gave to so many for a better life. Sheila's focus with her children was always on education and making a difference. Sheila derived deep satisfaction from the paths her children chose which served the well-being of others. Jeff as a police officer, homicide detective and a member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force protecting the community as well as an attorney after retiring from the police department and Jennie as a middle school teacher touching the lives of children for 38 years.

Sheila is survived by her daughter, Jennie Katz, her son Jeffrey Katz, his wife Julie and Sheila's pride and joy, her grandchildren, Jake, attending Northeastern University, College of Engineering and Grace, a senior in high school. She will be watching over them....
